Program Notes

Much of my work as an electroacoustic composer has been devoted to working with granular synthesis and processing. I find the textures, washes, and clouds of sound it creates both compelling and evocative of physical motion. In Shifting Hesitant, I was interested in creating the impression of motion that constantly pushes forward without ever developing a sense of stability. The fragments of melody and harmony that remain after the granulation look forward and back at the same time, to my ear: they shift and hesitate, time and again.
